Download God Macabre
Artist: God Macabre: mp3 download Genre(s): Metal Discography: The Winterlong Year: 1992 Tracks: 7 One of the unsung early champions in Sweden's prosperous death metal shot of the early '90s, God Macabre was formed by vocaliser Per Boder, guitar player Ola Sjoberg, bassist Tomas Johansson, and drummer Niklas Nilsson. Originally vocation themselves Macabre End, the little Joe, like many of their friends, wound up at Stockholm's Sunlight Studios, where engine driver Tomas Skogsberg (before long to turn a scene icon himself) helped them record a three-song demonstration in September 1990. Fast-forward to a year later, and the mathematical group had importantly graceful their post-grindcore rumble into a subtly melodic, tightly performed, tied still fierce onslaught of heavy. Recorded in December 1991 (with guitarist/bassist Jonas Stalhammer replacement Johansson), The Winterlong boasted all of the sonic traits which would bestow up to typify the authoritative Swedish death alloy style, by and by made storied by the likes of Dark Tranquility, At the Gates, and the awe-inspiring Entombed. Unfortunately, the record album was never released out-of-door Sweden and quick attenuated into obscureness as the band felled seam apart. It would, notwithstanding, finally be released a decade later by Relapse Records, which too saw fit to let in the band's demo recordings to boot. |

Today's SIFF schedule
Previously dramatized in "Survive!" (1976) and "Alive" (1993), the true story of a 1972 Andes plane crash finally gets the full documentary treatment in "Stranded: I've Come From a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains" (9:15 tonight at the Egyptian). The director, Gonzalo Arijon, was able to talk to all 16 survivors, and their memories dominate the film.
Never sensationalistic, always sensitive to the deep affection the survivors clearly feel for each other, Arijon deals at length with the avalanches that killed eight people (after the crash), the desperation brought on by hunger (a tube of toothpaste provides dessert for everyone) and the cannibalism that became necessary when the only food available was human flesh.
Actors re-create several key moments and archival footage fills in the rest. The television material from the early 1970s is in shockingly threadbare condition. This was a catastrophe that received worldwide attention at the time, but the remaining footage looks like it was recorded a century ago.

The Sand Pebbles - 6/3/2008
A three hour epic about a U.S. patrol in 1926 China? Minghella and Bertolucci still make movies like this. Back in 1966 the auteur of the day was Robert Wise, who'd just come off of The Sound of Music. and this story of a ship headed upriver in revolution-torn China is as plodding as the engine on its gunboat. Much of the running time consists of engineer Steve McQueen working on the boat and trying to communicate with the local "slope heads," notably including a young Mako as a local co-worker. The last half of the movie has McQueen on the most protracted search and rescue mission imaginable. Wise has no handle on the out-of-control, yawn-inducing scenes, but McQueen helps to keep things generally interesting. Nominated for eight Oscars, The Sand Pebbles ultimately won none.

play the title role in Eloise in Paris, has already made her first promotional
appearance. On Tuesday Beatty arrived at New York's Plaza hotel, where the famous
portrait of Eloise, taken down during the hotel's recent refurbishment, was rehung
outside the Palm Court restaurant. The Plaza, the setting for Kay Thompson's Eloise
novels (six-year-old Eloise lived on the top floor), reopened Sunday after undergoing three
years of renovations that turned the hotel's original 805 rooms into 282 hotel rooms
and 181 condominiums. Production of the movie -- presumably the hotel will have a
role -- is due to begin in August.
